sweetSKIN / Rafael Alvarez / EIRA

sweetSKIN, a solo by the Portuguese choreographer Rafael Alvarez in which the unlikely character of a skinhead meets the Bach’s Solo Cello Suites in a choreography that reflects the different perspectives of reality. How the perception of an image is affected by what we see, what we know and what we believe or are taken to believe?

“Nothing is what it seems” was the key idea that the Portuguese choreographer has explored in this piece created in 2012, originally in collaboration with Portuguese cellist Nuno Abreu.

Alvarez confronts our gaze over this conflicted and aggressive character, subverting his identity and physicality, playing metaphorically and poetically through irony upon his inherent violence and corruption over the respect of human diversity. With this dark and oppressive landscape, the body and movement that Alvarez explores, both dramaturgically and choreographically, offers an aesthetic and political dimension of movement, questioning the foundations of discrimination upon race, gender and identity. This performance, by departing from a negative perspective, where exclusion, fear and oppression is imposed over what is different and singular, plays a double transgression, displacing and reterritorializing the symbolic aggressor’s body (skinhead), placing him in a bare, fragile and vulnerable (sweet) skin. At the same time invites the audience to question themselves about their own prejudices and stereotyped perspectives over the „other“, different from us. This sweetened skin sustains a humanised body of redemption and hope embracing plurality, freedom and diversity as the main 'capital' of modernity and democracy. Diversity of bodies, ideas, emotions and lives. The same diversity, texture, singularity and depth that emerges from Bach Cello Suites building a parallel landscape of sounds, images and silences.

After all, humanism can be more than an utopian mirage, it is not always bright and shiny like a Las Vegas fake paradise, but again, life is not about perfection, is about love.
